About Cape Cod
Cape Cod is the common term for the county of Barnstable, once a peninsula, now a man-made island since the Cape Cod Canal was created as a much-needed short cut for mariners. Two bridges connect Cape Cod to the mainland: the Bourne Bridge and the Sagamore Bridge.
The Cape is comprised of 15 towns: Bourne, Sandwich, Falmouth, Mashpee, Barnstable, Yarmouth, Dennis, Harwich, Brewster, Chatham, Orleans, Eastham, Wellfleet, Truro and Provincetown ("P-town.")
The Cape is divided into three sections: Upper, Mid and Lower Cape. Upper Cape includes Bourne, Falmouth, Sandwich and Mashpee; Mid-Cape, Barnstable, Yarmouth and Dennis; the Lower Cape starts before the "elbow" and includes, Brewster, Harwich, Chatham, Orleans, Eastham, Wellfleet, Truro and Provincetown, the latter five also considered the "Outer Cape" area, since they have beaches on the Atlantic ocean. This area is particularly beautiful and preserved by the Cape Cod National Seashore.
The body of water between the southernmost part of the Cape and the islands of Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard is Nantucket Sound. North, and west of the Lower Cape is Cape Cod Bay.
Within the towns are distinct villages, sometimes mistaken for towns - for example: Hyannis, which is in the town of Barnstable.
Barnstable is comprised of seven villages: Hyannis, Barnstable Village, Cotuit, Marstons Mills, Centerville, West Barnstable and Osterville. Cummaquid? That's in Barnstable, too. And Bass River is in Yarmouth...South Yarmouth, to be exact. South Dennis is actually the middle of Dennis and West Dennis is south of South Dennis. It's a bit confusing but very quaint and charming. The town and village names help preserve the rich history of both the earliest settlers and the natives.
Yarmouth is divided into South Yarmouth, Yarmouth Port and West Yarmouth. Mashpee officially only has one village: er, Mashpee. But it also contains the areas of New Seabury, Great Neck and South Mashpee. Falmouth is bustling with villages and distinct areas including East Falmouth, Falmouth, North Falmouth, Waquoit Village, West Falmouth, Woods Hole, Acapesket, Davisville, Falmouth Heights, Hatchville, Mara Vista, Megansett, Menauhant, Quissett, Silver Beach, Sippewisset, Smalltown, and Teaticket.
Cape Cod is a popular tourist attraction and a bustling resort area with a wide array of attractions, activities and entertainment from golf to sailing to biking to just laying around on the beach. In the winter, the population deflates and the Cape quiets down.
